![]() ![]() ![]() In the unlikely event you've never played it, the gist is that you start with an empty field (its size and number of mines determined by difficulty setting) and have to uncover squares one at a time. Minesweeper was a Microsoft original, written by Robert Donner and Curt Johnson, and hasn't changed much over the years. Typically, Microsoft has written the core games, and farmed the others out to external companies, like Oberon Media for Purble Place (and the latest version of Minesweeper itself) in Windows Vista, and Maxis for Pinball back in Windows 95 Plus! (Note: actual excitement may not have justified the exclamation point.) Most recently, Microsoft promoted Spider Solitaire to official Windows game for Vista, with the robot puzzle game Tinker the last of the utterly mis-named Windows Ultimate Extras. PINBALL: 3D Pinball was one of the most popular Plus! games, and like many, later given away free in Windows Other games, like Pinball, HoverBowl and Spider Solitaire, have been added to Windows over the years in the form of Plus! packs, but never really become well known until added to the actual operating system. Still, it has its fans, and it served as an excellent way for Microsoft to prove that Windows 95 had a chance of replacing DOS as the gamer's operating system of choice. The more advanced Solitaire was a primer for drag-and-drop controls, just as the more recent puzzler Inkball was intended to get people more comfortable with pen based controls on the Tablet PCs that never actually took off.Įasily the least memorable of the set was Hover, partly because 3D in Windows is no longer a technological feat by anyone's standards, but mostly because it was astronomically dull. It was partly intended as a way of teaching people basic mouse controls in an era where most computing had been text-based. Like most Windows games, there's more to Minesweeper than just killing time. ![]()

![]() ![]() The Islamic Republic of Iran is not easy to intimidate and is likely to retaliate asymmetrically. In hindsight, the central lesson of the war in the 1980s is that it is easy to start a conflict with Iran and very difficult to end it. ![]() The lessons of the first war with Iran should be carefully considered before the United States embarks hastily on a second. The United States engaged in an undeclared yet bloody naval and air war, while Iraq fought a brutal land war against Iran. During the late 1980s, President Ronald Reagan intervened in the Iran- Iraq War in support of Baghdad and Saddam Hussein, ultimately leading to an Iraqi victory. As the United States and Iran approach confrontation and possible war to halt Tehran’s nuclear program, it is useful to remember that America has already fought one war with the Islamic Republic of Iran. President Barack Obama has committed the United States to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. ![]() ![]() ![]() Still like about 70-80% of the entire unit roster was completely useless and you would never ever build these units past the very early game. In AoW2 and SM the heroes also could get absurdly powerful but they also introduced really powerful T3 and T4 units. The difficulty curve I felt was insanely proportional to your hero levels and I never felt there's "other strategies" that would be remotely as good as just getting your hero pumped up. You reached a point where your hero with all the enchants and leveling buffs could solo almost everything. In AoW1 it was a hero bulldozer and most of the stuff quickly lost its meaning as your hero gained levels. ![]() In terms of balance or design? I truly believe 3 and 4 are just much better games. AoW3 I think suffers specifically in the charm department from a serviceable but lackluster art direction which I think is the worst compared to the other 3 games in the series. And 1 and 2 I think feel better in this department because each race choice locked you into a very specific unit set. If you want to compare stuff like writing, charm, flavour then yeah, it's a competition. It's funny how AoW3 and 4 are compared negatively to 1 and 2&SM, or rather: it's funny WHY they're compared negatively. I'll agree that the specializations are not impactful enough, but the class-race setup is more than varied in itself. As far as elements not being differentiated enough, the class system is more of than than any of the previous games. The insertion of balance is there to keep the tension on the tactical scenarios and remove the more extravagant combinations of MoM (which admittedly are strategically a lot of fun, but on another level). ![]() Following that criteria, AoW 1 was atrocious in so far as the hero abuse made tactical manoeuvring and unit variety often pointless. I would say the point of these games is to develop tactical battles on a strategic field, with an emphasis on the individual unit characteristics. In that sense it's not flawed at all, if anything this series knows very well what it's doing. The third game is the accomplishment of said balanced design. ![]() I disagree with the consensus here, too much nostalgia bullshit as usual AoW always was meant to be a more balanced version of MoM. I'll admit the writing on the first game was cute, and the rest is bad, but it doesn't matter. Who plays these games for the story? Jesus. ![]() ![]() You will see a list of all usernames linked with your alternate email address or phone number. ![]() Select Text, Call, or Use email instead.Įnter the code that Microsoft sends to the phone number or email address you have just entered.
